Facebook flip flops on Beacon ad program
It was just yesterday that Facebook changed their mind and announced that users will not automatically be enrolled in the Beacon ad program. They have changed their mind again today as users will now have the option to completely opt out of the program if they choose to do so.
On top of thet the CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg has come out and made an official blog post, apologizing to Facebook users. He stated «We've made a lot of mistakes building this feature, but we've made even more with how we've handled them. We simply did a bad job with this release, and I apologize for it.»
Facebook gave users not long ago the option to make it so Beacon would not track and announce every purchase that they make on the internet and such. The problem with this though is that users could still not completely opt out of the progran. They now can do so with this second major change to the Beacon ad program.
The way Beacon would work is that it would track actions of Facebook users on external sites such as Blockbuster or Fandango. Over 40 Web sites are already signed up. All activitiy is then reported back to Facebook within the network of friends of that user.
Many called this an invasion of privacy.
